PC addict converts to MacBook

I started with a home computer in late ’80s. Can’t remember exactly when, but sometime between ‘88 and ‘90. Lived in Geneva at the time, and bought an Atari 1040 (I think), with eMagic Logic - to produce accompaniment tracks for the church choir I was conducting at the time.

A couple of years later, the company I worked for (Digital Equipment Corp.) had an employee Christmas sale of their early PC’s, and we decided to get one, mainly to help catch up with this new technology at the time…

And we’ve got deeper and deeper into PCs ever since, to the extent that we closed down a successful Management Consulting Practice and went “full time” on-line.

But the combination of my laptop hard disk crash, the tiring cycle of maintaining Windows PCs, and the arrival of Vista with Microsoft’s cavalier approach to protecting customer investment (we’d have to buy most of our application software all over again), it seemed worth looking into escaping Bill Gates’ clutches.

So, my wife and I looked at the specs, talked to some colleagues who knew both worlds, and visited PC World last Saturday.

After lengthy discussion we decided on a high-end Apple MacBook Pro - as a portable/ desktop PC replacement, plus a mid-range Win XP Acer model for Isabel - so she can keep up to date when we are travelling. We’ve used Sony laptops and desktops since we started our Consulting business in 1998. Interestingly, the cost of these 2 laptops was about the same as just my Sony laptop last time…

Both arrived on today. I’m going to try to track the learning curve as I transfer to the MacBook.
